Lisa Lane - CEO & Database Solutions

Lisa Lane –

Founder & CEO

Lisa Lane

Founder & CEO

Consulting Expertise

Lisa has launched and implemented new technologies, particularly fundraising and online community software, for nearly 20 years. Hundreds of hours spent with clients and years of managing projects have given her first-hand knowledge of the opportunities and challenges unique to the nonprofit world.

Lisa trained extensively in The Raiser’s Edge® and NetCommunity™ during her time as a Senior Consultant at Blackbaud® before returning to independent consulting. She had been a fundraiser for small educational and membership organizations, before becoming familiar with nonprofit needs for online communities while working at Stanford University. In 2010, Lisa co-founded Beyond Nines, an independent firm offering the most comprehensive Blackbaud® professional services and hosting available. She started Nonprofit Garden in 2015 to expand those services to nonprofits regardless of their vendor or software selection.

Known for her ability to meet challenging deadlines and work within budget constraints, Lisa has a knack for bringing competing stakeholders to agreement. Clients also appreciate the value (and humor) she adds to each project as compared to their previous experiences with technology integrations and project management.

What gets me out of bed in the morning:

Coffee! My morning routine starts with a review of our active consulting projects, talking with new and current customers, and making sure the Nonprofit Garden team is happy.  Happy consultants make happy clients!

What keeps me up at night:

Finding the best possible staff for our team. Balancing quality and growth are critical. I firmly believe we’re only as good as our last project.

Lisa earned her M.B.A. in organizational development with a focus on nonprofit organizations from the University of California, Davis in 1993. Lisa is certified at the Associate level for Blackbaud® Certification in The Raiser’s Edge® (bCRE).

The Bigger Picture

When she’s not on a plane or cruising in her convertible, with her dog Tucker.  Lisa can be found cooking with fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables from the garden. She counts herself lucky to be living in colorful Colorado doing what she loves, and enabling others to do more.

Rebecca Leifert

Vice President & Senior Consultant

Rebecca Leifert

Consulting Expertise

Rebecca began her career as a designer but found her joy as a classroom teacher. In 2006 she transitioned to the Advancement Office at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy, where she served as their Web & Brand Manager. There she gained experience in marketing for independent schools as well as extensive knowledge for designing in & around Blackbaud NetCommunity. Since 2008, she has worked for and with educational institutions, as well as Nonprofit Garden’s full portfolio of mission-driven clients.

Rebecca’s area of expertise is in design & web projects including but certainly not limited to NetCommunity, WordPress, and Luminate. She excels at project implementation, management and personalized training. Clients repeatedly applaud her style of training & her ability to bring even the most “technology phobic” staffers to a place of comfort to independently use their software.

What gets me out of bed in the morning:

Creativity - I love helping someone’s vision come to life. There's no better feeling that working with my clients to discover their individual site needs, pairing that with the strategy of a meaningful website, and working with our designers to create a creative & engaging online solution that support that vision.

What keeps me up at night:

Code! And trying to figure out how to do something that I've been told isn't possible.

Rebecca is passionate about using strong design to further her clients’ missions & implementing solutions that feel right for their projects. She has earned the unofficial moniker “Email Queen” for her ability to create reliable and beautiful responsive email templates regardless of whether they will be used in Constant Contact, MailChimp, Emma, NetCommunity or other software.

Rebecca has a BFA with specialization in Graphic Design from the University of Central Florida.

The Bigger Picture

Rebecca and her husband recently moved to Jacksonville, Florida. She is happy to be back home in the South and closer to the coast. She's a dog mom to their rescued Australian Cattle Dog mix, Skye Mercy, who lives for chasing squirrels & playing on the beach. In her down time, Rebecca loves volunteering with the SPCA, gardening, painting and up-cycling home decor.

Kristen Kenyon - Raiser's Edge & Database Solutions Consultant

Kristen F. Kenyon –

Senior Consultant

Kristen F. Kenyon

Senior Consultant

Consulting Expertise

With more than 20 years of successful fundraising and nonprofit experience, Kristen has a particular expertise in The Raiser's Edge as well as healthcare, cultural and membership-driven organizations.

Kristen shines at finding cost-effective solutions for clients with limited resources and is known for helping clients strategically assess their day-to-day business processes. She is especially strong in the customization of those processes; strategic planning for annual and capital campaigns; and managing events, volunteer groups and boards.

As a Raiser's Edge consultant, Kristen draws on years of front-line experience working at all levels of nonprofit organizations. She began her fundraising career at California Pacific Medical Center Foundation. Next came development positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) and at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where she managed the subscriber capital campaign during the construction of the Walt Disney Concert Hall. After leaving development, she became a Senior Consultant for The Raiser's Edge at Blackbaud, Inc.

After leaving Blackbaud, Kristen became an independent consultant and has been working with Lisa and her consulting teams since 2006. Kristen has particular areas of interest that include healthcare, arts and cultural institutions.

What gets me out of bed in the morning:

Helping our clients make fundraising and development operations more efficient so that they can spend more time and money on their real work — their missions. And a really big pot of Irish breakfast tea!

What keeps me up at night:

I’m not a worrier by nature, but I am concerned with how many nonprofits still struggle with technology. Some organizations are missing an opportunity to be more strategic about how they spend limited resources — not just for fundraising, but across the organization as a whole.

Kristen holds a BA in history from the University of California, Davis, and a BS in nursing from Samuel Merritt University.

The Bigger Picture

When she’s not planning her next excursion (India, Iceland, Italy…) Kristen can be found working in her garden, baking pies, or blowing bubbles with her two young nieces! She is a native Californian and doesn't plan on leaving anytime soon.

Executive Assistant

Claudean Ostrom

What gets me out of bed in the morning:

My to-do list! Whether it is for work, keeping Lisa and the team at Nonprofit Garden on track or for my family, my phone is constantly going off with reminders. I am excited to be working with nonprofits, and supporting so many important missions in the background.

What keeps me up at night:

Usually I take it one day at a time, but night is when I run through the day and think about the following day. It is usually another list of things to do including doing homework, practicing spelling words and getting the science fair projects done!

Claudean is a master organizer. Her role at Nonprofit Garden is to keep CEO Lisa Lane on track, whether it is scheduling calls with existing or prospective clients, managing her travel and speaking engagements, finding things for her, or getting things to her that she left behind in her hectic schedule. We try to keep it all fun.

Claudean previously worked in venture capital with two premier firms in Boston as an executive assistant to investors that once ran internationally recognized organizations. She also has an operational background having worked in several start-ups.

She now lives south of Denver with her husband, Brad, and her daughter, Lorin.

Claudean holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Central Connecticut State University.

The Bigger Picture

If Claudean is not in the office, she’s either busy with her daughter (school, homework, carpool…), volunteering or taking horseback lessons in rural Colorado.

Laura Kurz - Consultant

Laura Kurz –

Laura Kurz

Laura Kurz

What gets me out of bed in the morning:

Either a 3-year-old curly-headed little girl, or a 5-year-old boy! Professionally, I am anxious to start my day with a to-do list and love crossing things off as the day goes on. I have been a list maker from a young age, and I still keep it the old-fashioned way, in a reporter’s notebook.

What keeps me up at night:

I recently saw a saying: “My bed is a magical place where I suddenly remember everything I was supposed to do.” I find when I lay down at night I’m constantly thinking of the things I want to do . If only there were a few more hours in the day…

Consulting Expertise

In addition to keeping colleagues and clients in stitches, Laura works on Nonprofit Garden projects that require a marketing communications perspective. Her background is in nonprofit public relations and communications, specifically for educational institutions.

She has served as Director of Communications at St. Paul’s School in Maryland, as the Assistant Director of Foundation Communications at the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, and as Director of Communications at the University of Oklahoma’s College of Engineering. Her work has been recognized by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Circle of Excellence awards.

Laura holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Lehigh University and a master’s degree in writing from The Johns Hopkins University.

for independent thinkers!

Our team has extraordinary experience working with hundreds of nonprofits. Although we all started using Blackbaud products — as fundraisers or website managers — we are expanding our reach! As you will see in our Success Stories – we still specialize in the Blackbaud suite of products, but we’re doing so much more. In our Resources section, you will find articles about both Blackbaud products as well as WordPress, and other technology solutions you can use to better accomplish your mission.

“We had previously worked with Nonprofit Garden and we were happy with the results and our relationship. We were confident after our previous experiences, selecting them to update both design and functionality for our NetCommunity site was the right decision.”

Rob Caudill, Director of Graduate Development, Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity

“Would we recommend working with Nonprofit Garden? Hands down YES! In fact, we are planning to use them again to help us move off of NetCommunity to WordPress in the Summer of 2018. Their experience, the talented staff of project managers and designers they work with and the entire experience was great.”

Michael Hetrick, Online Communications Coordinator, East Texas Food Bank

“Nonprofit Garden helped us to thinking and achieve bigger. Ideas that we thought weren’t possible either because of functionality or staff skills were able to be implanted with Nonprofit Garden’s guidance.”

Sarah Burns – Senior Communications Director, Dallas Womens Foundation

“The Nonprofit Garden team has taken a very scary process and helped us break it down into manageable bites. Each member of the team is talented and easy to work with. I don’t know how we would have implemented RE NXT without their insight and expertise. They are a perfect combination of tech skill and fundraising art.”

Mary Hohensee – VP Development, Avenidas

“Our team benefited greatly from the consultations with Nonprofit Garden. As an independent party, they were able to create a forum for the planning and execution of our new website, focusing on our agreed-upon highest priorities. Their experience with mobile styles, the Raiser’s Edge, and Blackbaud’s NetCommunity platform was top-notch. The on-site training and guidance resulted in a perfect site launch.”

Jason Longo – Communications Specialist & Webmaster, Saint Leo University Advancement

“The level of training provided by Rebecca was exceptional. While I was nervous about working in a new platform (WordPress), the training and support from Nonprofit Garden helped me relax. I’ve been able to handle a lot of things I never thought possible…”

Angela Sosebee – Communications & Marketing Specialist, The Relatives

“Simply put, Kristen is a rock star! This is the second school where I’ve brought Nonprofit Garden in as a partner – Kristen listened, understood and immediately got to work to help clean and optimize our data. Kristen is a fantastic teacher and has been instrumental in bringing our staff up to speed very quickly. We couldn’t be happier.”

Erin Wright – Director of Advancement, San Francisco Day School

“Nonprofit Garden was awesome. Great training…just wish I’d had it nine months ago!”

Kathryn Arnold – Marketing & Communications Manager, Spirit Rock Meditation Center

“We couldn’t be more pleased with both the process and the results. Collaborating with Nonprofit Garden provided us with the tools to conduct the business of alumni engagement and university giving in a very modern way.”

Denny Moller – Vice President of University Advancement & Communications, Saint Leo University

“Rebecca and the rest of the dedicated team was phenomenal. We received so much training about how to actually manage the work ourselves after implementation. I saw that as an added value.”

Mark Klausen – Marketing Communications Manager, Columbia Bible College

“I just want to thank the Nonprofit Garden team so much for all of your help on this project! You were truly a pleasure to work with!”

Sabrina Dunn – Digital Media Coordinator, Medical College of Georgia Alumni Association

“Thank you so much. We appreciated your diligence, humor and helpfulness throughout the partnership. I’m especially grateful for the encouragement along the way. It was a real pleasure to work with your team on this site redesign. As our needs evolve, I hope that we will have an opportunity to work together again.”

Andra Stevens – Director of Communications and Creative Services, Africa University Development Office

“We knew that we wanted — no, needed — mobile optimization. We couldn’t risk looking behind the times. We needed to be in front of the trends.”

Lisa Notter – Senior Director, Advancement Communications, Events & Stewardship at IIT Alumni Association

“In working with Kristen on our Annual Campaign, we reconnected with our donors in a really specialized and personal way – and hit way above our yearly fundraising goal! Thank you so much. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without you, Kristen and Lisa.”

Michael O’Donohue – Vice President, Peninsula Family Services

“These guys met and then exceeded my expectations. The team did a hefty amount of heavy lifting and answered all of our questions along the way. It was like NetCommunity™ was finally unveiled. Now we’re rockin’ and rollin’!”

Phil Zepeda – Vice President for Cause Marketing and Communications, American College of Chest Physicians

“We knew if we made an investment in training more staff, we would reap great rewards in efficiency. Now everyone feels like they have a stake in our success.”

Marianne Crosley – Cleveland Leadership Center

“Pulling this project off was going to be tough, but we had to make it work. Your team helped us figure out what was critical and what was negotiable in terms of NetCommunity™, so we could trim where we needed. That was invaluable.”

Kristine Leja – Senior Director of Development and Communications, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco

“Our experiences with Lisa and her team has given us confidence to step back from the table and venture off on our own. Their expertise and responsiveness helped ELIC leverage our technology into an ongoing tool for success.”

Steve Schlotter – IT Director, English Language Institute China

“There was so much functionality about which we weren’t even aware! It was so helpful to have Rebecca & the Nonprofit Garden team walk us through best practices — and break our bad habits.”

Beth Kohler – Director of Development, Schoolcraft College Foundation

“Our thanks to all of you for facilitating this major transition. We are doing the DANCE OF JOY down our Motherhouse hallways!”

Margaret McCarthy – Congregational Development Director, Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose

“You pushed us as an organization to rethink the ways we were doing things – from what was on our website, to how to get ready for going mobile, to our internal processes. We wanted to stay relevant and that was exactly what we needed. Because they were Blackbaud® experts without being Blackbaud®, we felt you could be more objective. So glad we found the right fit!”

Ken Kurz – Director Information Services, U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation

“I didn’t need to go to a full Blackbaud® training and learn everything there is to know about The Raiser’s Edge®. Your team focused on what was important for our roles, helping us think through the best and most streamlined way to use the database.”

Anne Im – Director of Development, AACI
